From Goodwill to Growth

Client Objective

Despite deep affection for the Duluth Public Library, the Duluth Library Foundation faced ongoing confusion between the Foundation, the Friends group, and the Library itself. Many community members didn’t know that 100% of library programs are funded through private donations. As a result, the Foundation had a loyal but narrow donor base, limited digital fundraising infrastructure, and challenges with donor growth and retention.

Without philanthropic investment, critical programming, from early literacy to technology access, would not exist. Duluth Library Foundation needed to clearly articulate its distinct role and demonstrate that private support is essential to the library’s future. The goal was to increase revenue and awareness while building a sustainable, donor-centered strategy rooted in https://duluthlibraryfoundation.org/’s long-term vision.

Building a Data-Driven Foundation

Research + Competitive Analysis

To understand DLF’s position within the local arts and culture landscape, we completed a Fundraising Competitive Analysis and a Content and Communications Analysis. This research identified key barriers, including brand confusion with the Friends group and perceptions among middle-income audiences that the library was fully publicly funded.

By grounding our work in data and benchmarking best practices, we ensured that every recommendation was informed by sector insights and tailored to Duluth’s unique philanthropic environment.

Defining a Distinct Philanthropic Identity

Messaging Framework + Brand Clarification

To address brand confusion, we developed a comprehensive Messaging Framework that clarified DLF’s role as the philanthropic engine behind the library. The framework differentiated the Foundation from the Friends group and positioned giving as an investment in Duluth’s long-term future.

This work aligned closely with our Brand Definition approach, ensuring that every touchpoint, from campaign materials to donor communications, reinforced a cohesive narrative. We also developed a campaign theme that bridged nostalgia with innovation, honoring the library’s legacy while highlighting its evolving role in community life.

Creative assets included:

  • A new logo lockup for National Library Week
  • A community-facing poster displayed in the library
  • A double-sided flyer to clarify DLF’s impact
  • A suite of icons and custom visual elements for ongoing use

These tools gave the Foundation a stronger visual and verbal identity that could be carried across campaigns and channels.

Shifting from Reactive to Year-Round Growth

Annual Fundraising + Engagement Strategy

Rather than relying on isolated campaigns, we built a holistic Annual Fundraising and Engagement Strategy rooted in audience segmentation and year-round narrative momentum. This work reflects our connected, goal-driven approach to Fundraising strategy: https://mediacause.com/fundraising/

We segmented audiences based on capacity, perception, and engagement stage, including:

  • Upper-income philanthropic prospects
  • Middle-income audiences seeking clear ROI and community impact
  • Families and younger donors motivated by story-driven giving
  • Lapsed and loyal donors in need of personalized stewardship

By mapping tailored messaging, revenue targets, and engagement tactics across the year, DLF moved from event-driven fundraising to a structured growth plan with defined KPIs and a clearer path to sustainability.

Clarity, Alignment, and a Blueprint for Growth

Our Impact

While performance results are still forthcoming, the Foundation now operates with a cohesive framework that positions it for measurable success.

  • Comprehensive Messaging Framework that clearly differentiates DLF from the Friends group and the Library
  • Defined revenue targets and donor segments to guide year-round fundraising
  • Integrated annual engagement plan aligned to National Library Week and other key moments
